The Medical Lead Coder supports oversight of inpatient coding operations, including work volume, distribution, workflow evaluations, and testing. Responsibilities involve reviewing inpatient and outpatient medical records to assign ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes accurately, ensuring compliance with coding guidelines, HIPAA regulations, and maintaining high accuracy to prevent claim denials.
The role includes researching coding issues, providing internal coding training, auditing and quality assurance reviews, collaborating with healthcare providers and billing staff regarding documentation and claims, generating reports for healthcare management, and supporting external coding audits.
Maintains professional coding ethics, stays updated with coding changes and industry trends, participates in team meetings and professional development, and assists with software/system enhancements to optimize coding processes. Works collaboratively to ensure seamless billing and reimbursement.
- Minimum high school diploma or equivalent plus Medical Coding Education; bachelor's degree preferred in health information management, business administration, or related field.
- Minimum 3 years of progressive coding experience; preferred over 5 years in acute care hospital setting.
- Required certifications: Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Outpatient Coder (COC), Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Specialist Physician-Based (CCS-P), or Certified Coding Associate (CCA).
- Preferred certifications: Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).
- Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pathophysiology, ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT codes, regulatory and compliance requirements.
- Proficient with coding references, software tools, and electronic health records (EHR).
- Ability to analyze complex medical documentation and coding scenarios.
