Experienced Outpatient Medical Record Coder

At Stony Brook Medicine, the Experienced Outpatient Medical Record Coder is responsible for selecting and assigning accurate codes from current coding systems including ICD-10 CM/PCS, CPT, and HCPCS codes.

Responsibilities include assigning ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, and HCPCS codes with modifiers for facility services, reviewing medical records and documentation to determine appropriate codes for services and diagnoses, utilizing coding resources for accuracy, complying with HIPAA privacy regulations, using facility encoder interfacing with hospital mainframe/EMR remotely, proficiency with Microsoft Office, Citrix, Adobe Reader, maintaining knowledge of laws and regulations impacting compliant coding, meeting productivity and quality goals, and confidentiality of medical record data. Additional duties as assigned.

Required qualifications: Associate's degree with at least 5 years outpatient facility coding experience plus CCS, CCS-P, or CPC certification OR 8 years outpatient facility coding experience with certification OR 10 years outpatient facility coding experience.

Preferred qualifications: 5+ years facility outpatient procedure coding experience, bachelor's degree in HIM, Health Sciences, or Health Informatics, experience in Academic Medical Center facility coding, cancer center injection/infusion coding, emergency room observation encounter coding, injections and infusion coding for facilities, and surgical procedure coding across specialties.

Pre-employment includes physical exam, medical clearance, reference checks, drug screen, regulatory screenings, and license/certificate verification.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • Associate's degree plus 5 years outpatient facility coding and CCS, CCS-P or CPC certification, OR 8 years outpatient facility coding with certification, OR 10 years outpatient facility coding experience
  • Proficient in ICD-10 CM/PCS, CPT, HCPCS coding
  • Knowledge and adherence to HIPAA regulations
  • Proficiency with facility encoder, Microsoft Office, Citrix, Adobe Reader
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, and industry guidance impacting coding compliance
  • Ability to meet coder productivity and quality standards

The total compensation includes a generous leave policy, health plans, and a state pension. Some positions may offer annual supplemental pay such as $4,000 location pay for full-time positions.
