The American Hospital Association (AHA) is a national organization representing hospitals and health care networks and their communities. The AHA has two main offices: Washington, D.C. and Chicago, with a flexible hybrid work schedule (3 days in office, 2 days remote).
This position is a Medical Coding Summer Intern role based in the Chicago office. It is a part-time, onsite role from May through August 2026, with 10 to 20 hours per week over a 12-week internship.
Interns will build foundational skills in medical coding (ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, HCPCS Level II) and develop clear communication abilities related to coding guidance. Duties include researching coding regulations, drafting coding advice, and supporting documentation improvements.
Responsibilities include learning coding systems, interpreting CMS, AMA, and Coding Clinic guidelines, drafting actionable coding advice, developing educational content, participating in peer reviews, and gaining mentorship from experienced professionals.
Education:
- Pursuing or holding an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management (HIM), Health Care Administration, Communications, Technical Writing, or related field.
Skills & Abilities:
- Strong writing and research skills.
- Interest in medical coding, healthcare documentation, or clinical workflows.
- Interest in a mentor-supported learning environment.
