Abstractor Coder II

The Abstractor/Coder II performs complex, specialty-specific coding for orthopedic practices at multiple locations with advanced knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS coding systems. Responsibilities include coding highly complex orthopedic services, resolving coding edits, denials, and rejections, improving provider documentation to optimize reimbursement, mentoring less experienced coders, and supporting quality and compliance efforts while adhering to HIPAA standards.

This role works with minimal supervision, serves as a subject matter expert, and partners with clinical staff to ensure accurate and compliant charge capture and documentation.

Key duties involve maintaining expert coding knowledge, researching and resolving payer and documentation issues, providing educational feedback to providers, identifying coding risk areas, escalating issues appropriately, conducting quality reviews, and participating in training initiatives.

Candidates should have at least 5 years of coding experience with 3+ years in highly complex specialty coding, preferably with experience in academic medical center environments. Certification such as RHIA, RHIT, CCS-P, CPC, or CCS is required.

Flexible work arrangements including remote work options are available for coders in good standing.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associates or Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years coding experience, with 3+ years coding highly complex specialty services.
  • At least 4 years coding physician services or recent HIM bachelor's graduate with RHIA.
  • Experience with electronic billing and medical record systems (Epic, Last Word, IDX) required.
  • Preferred experience in academic medical centers or large hospital-physician billing groups.
  • Prior experience with Medicine primary and subspecialty physician coding strongly preferred.
  • Must have certification: RHIA, RHIT, CCS-P, CPC, or CCS.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of billing and coding practices.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, communicate professionally, and mentor staff.
