The Lead Medical Coder is a certified professional coder responsible for assisting the Medical Coding Office Manager with oversight of daily coding operations. Tasks include assigning ICD, CPT, HCPCS, and inpatient medical codes, abstracting data from records, chart analysis, research coding issues, peer reviews, and serving as a medical documentation and coding technical expert to TONHC providers.
The role involves specialized medical record tasks using established procedures, coding conventions, and guidelines. The position impacts patient care by accurately recording services performed and works independently under general supervision.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading and guiding day-to-day inpatient and outpatient medical coding services and staff
- Assigning appropriate ICD, CPT, HCPCS codes per official guidelines and federal/state regulations
- Reviewing physician documentation and collaborating with providers for clarification
- Ensuring accuracy and sequencing of codes
- Utilizing coding software and abiding by AMA coding rules
- Educating clinicians on proper documentation practices
- Performing coding audits, data abstraction for billing and governmental reporting
- Participating in policy development and technical support for EHR and coding systems
- Training coworkers, contractors, and interns in coding practices
Knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary:
- Familiarity with Tohono O'odham culture and applicable laws including HIPAA
- Expertise in medical coding standards from AHIMA, AHA, CMS, NCHS
- Proficiency with ICD/CM, CPT, HCPCS coding, DRG, APC systems, and relevant software
- Strong computer and report preparation skills
- Commitment to accuracy and compliance with ethical coding standards
- Ability to communicate effectively and work independently
Minimum qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in medical coding or billing
- At least 6 months supervisory or leadership experience
Licenses and certifications:
- Certified Coder certification from AAPC or AHIMA (or equivalent) required
- Typing speed of 40 WPM
- Background checks and possibly a valid driver's license required
- Fluency in Tohono O'odham language and English may be required based on department needs
- High School Diploma or GED
- Minimum 3 years experience in medical coding or billing
- Six months supervisory or leadership experience in an office setting
- Certified Coder certification (AAPC, AHIMA or equivalent)
- Typing speed of 40 WPM
- Ability to pass criminal background and FBI fingerprint checks
- Valid driver's license may be required with clean driving record
- May need fluency in both Tohono O'odham language and English
