Facility Coder III - Surgical Specialties

Atrium Health is seeking a Facility Coder III specialized in Surgical Specialties, preferably with GI experience. This full-time role involves outpatient coding operations within a hospital-based or facility environment.

Primary responsibilities include reviewing complex medical documentation to assign accurate diagnosis and procedure codes using ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, and HCPCS systems, adhering to official coding guidelines and compliance regulations. The role also involves assisting with special projects, training other coders, monitoring compliance reviews, acting as a subject matter expert, and maintaining ethical coding standards.

The coder will work Monday through Friday during the first shift (40 hours per week) and must hold a coding certification from AAPC or AHIMA. Experience with professional coding in revenue cycle processes and familiarity with electronic health records and coding software are required. Continuing education and participation in coding meetings are part of the role.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • Coding certification from American Academy of Coders (AAPC) or American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)
  • Typically 5 years of professional coding experience including coding in revenue cycle processes and health information workflows
  • Advanced training beyond high school in Medical Coding or related field, or equivalent knowledge
  • Expertise in ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS codes, G-codes, modifiers, APC, and use of 3M Encoder
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, pathophysiology, surgical terminology, and pharmacology
  • Knowledge of NCCI edits and local/national coverage decisions
  • Experience with electronic medical records and Computer Assisted Coding software
  • Strong communication, analytical skills, attention to detail, and ethical standards
  • Experience with remote workforce operations
