Senior Outpatient Coder

At Houston Methodist, the Senior Outpatient Coder position ensures diagnostic and procedure codes are assigned accurately to day surgery and observation encounters based on electronic medical record documentation, maintaining compliance with established rules and regulatory guidelines.

Qualifications include an associate's or higher degree from a CAHIIM accredited program or equivalent experience, and three years of relevant outpatient coding experience or completion of Houston Methodist's Senior Outpatient Coder Transition Program.

Required certifications: one of RHIT, RHIA, CCS, CCA, CCS-P, or CPC.

Skills include proficiency in coding classification systems, DRG and APC systems, official coding guidelines and compliance, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, electronic encoder applications, and common office and coding software.

Responsibilities include interacting with coding team and stakeholders, responding promptly to coding requests, initiating physician queries, assigning diagnostic and procedural codes to high complexity encounters, ensuring accuracy and compliance with hospital and regulatory guidelines, reviewing and abstracting medical record data, maintaining productivity standards, and contributing to quality improvement efforts.

May require travel within and outside Houston Metropolitan area. Work attire is business professional. No on-call duties.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • Associate's or higher degree in a CAHIIM accredited Health Informatics and Information Management program or equivalent experience
  • Three years of relevant outpatient coding experience or successful completion of Houston Methodist's Senior Outpatient Coder Transition Program
  • Certification in one of the following: RHIT, RHIA, CCS, CCA, CCS-P, or CPC
  • Demonstrated competencies and proficiency in English communication
  • Knowledge of coding classification systems, DRG, APC systems, official coding guidelines, and coding compliance
  • Working knowledge of electronic medical records and imaging systems
  • Proficiency with electronic encoder applications and office software
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, and coworkers
