The Hospital Inpatient Coding Specialist reviews inpatient medical records and assigns ICD-10-CM diagnosis and ICD-10-PCS procedure codes to derive APR-DRG or MS-DRG for optimal reimbursement. This role collaborates with Clinical Documentation Integrity Specialists to ensure coding accuracy according to Centra's policies. Key responsibilities include assigning diagnosis and procedure codes, verifying DRG accuracy, abstracting required information, initiating provider coding queries, and ensuring coding productivity and accuracy standards are met. The specialist also assigns discharge status codes, ensures Medicaid certification completion, assigns HAC and POA indicators, communicates with CDI specialists, participates in meetings, and maintains coding competency through continuing education and official coding publications.
Additional functions involve maintaining confidentiality of patient information, utilizing remote office skills including Microsoft Office, communicating professionally, working independently, adapting to workflow changes, and performing other assigned duties.
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Certification required: RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CCA
- Minimum 2 years acute care inpatient coding experience
- Experience in coding multiple hospital specialties and remote coding preferred
- Proficiency in ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS, medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and disease processes demonstrated by assessments
- Knowledge of Inpatient Prospective Payment System, DRG methodologies, Severity of Illness, and Risk of Mortality
- Preferred: Bachelor's degree in Healthcare
