Position Summary: Responsible for ensuring accurate and efficient coding across multiple facilities within Orlando Health System through chart reviews, resolving problem accounts, and providing coding education in accordance with regulatory guidelines.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform detailed reviews for accuracy of principal and secondary diagnoses, co-morbidities, complications, and procedure code assignments based on provider documentation to ensure billing compliance, quality reporting, and optimal reimbursement.
- Assign accurate ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT-4 codes using electronic encoder applications per hospital policy and regulatory guidelines.
- Serve as a subject matter expert on coding guidelines, promptly responding to internal/external coding inquiries.
- Participate in coding meetings and educational sessions; provide expert feedback and share knowledge with stakeholders.
- Develop and present educational materials to support compliant coding practices.
- Communicate effectively with coders, physicians, and management teams.
- Collaborate with Revenue Management Team to review patient records for accuracy and best coding practices.
- Identify coding trends and recommend corrective actions for KPI reporting, process improvement, and education.
- Support Discharge Not Final Billed (DNFB) reviews to ensure timely coding and accurate billing.
- Act as a team leader and regional manager support; assist with system testing, reporting, data trending, and troubleshooting.
- Precept new coders and maintain compliance with ethical coding standards (AHIMA, AAPC).
- Participate in departmental meetings and utilize departmental resources to uphold coding standards.
Specialized Roles:
- Inpatient Liaison: Advanced knowledge of sequencing guidelines, ICD-10, MS-DRG, APR-DRG; collaborate on DRG assignments for compliance and reimbursement.
- Outpatient Liaison: Expertise in ICD-10, CPT coding, and payer edit resolutions.
- Radiation Oncology Liaison: Advanced ICD-10 and CPT coding skills specific to radiation oncology, modality billing rules, charge validation, and treatment plan review.
Education & Certification:
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management, or coding certificate program completion.
- Knowledge of official coding guidelines (AMA, AHA, CMS), anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology required.
- Must pass liaison coding skills test with 90% or higher.
- Certifications required: CCS, RHIA, RHIT (AHIMA), CPC, or COC.
Experience:
- Minimum 7 years of hospital inpatient/outpatient coding experience.
- Preferred 1 year of hospital coding teaching experience.
- Radiation Oncology Liaison requires 3 years oncology coding experience instead of teaching.
Other Information:
- Maintain 95% or higher coding accuracy.
- Strong computer literacy with Microsoft Word and Excel.

- Successful completion of liaison coding skills test with at least 90% score.
- Certification by one of the following: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), or Certified Outpatient Coder (COC).
- At least 7 years of hospital inpatient and/or outpatient coding experience.
- Preferred 1 year of hospital coding teaching experience; or for Radiation Oncology Liaison, 3 years of oncology coding experience in lieu of teaching experience.
