Senior Outpatient Coder

At Houston Methodist, the Senior Outpatient Coder position is responsible for ensuring diagnostic and procedure codes are assigned accurately to day surgery and observation encounters based upon documentation within the electronic medical record while maintaining compliance with established rules and regulatory guidelines.

The role requires assigning diagnostic and procedural codes to encounters of high complexity, maintaining departmental standards for coding quality using ICD-10-CM/ICD-10-PCS and CPT codes, reviewing medical records for accurate abstraction, and complying with the Standards of Ethical Coding by AHIMA.

Candidates should have an Associate's or higher degree in a health informatics program accredited by CAHIIM or equivalent experience, plus three years of relevant outpatient coding experience or completion of the Houston Methodist Senior Outpatient Coder Transition Program.

Required certifications include one of the following: RHIT, RHIA, CCS, CCA, CCS-P, or CPC.

The position involves effective communication with physicians and staff, responding promptly to coding requests, participating in team education, and contributing to quality improvement initiatives.

Travel within and outside the Houston Metropolitan area may be required. Business professional attire is required, and the position is non-exempt.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • Associate's or higher degree from a CAHIIM accredited program or additional two years of relevant experience in lieu of degree
  • Three years of relevant outpatient coding experience or successful completion of Houston Methodist Senior Outpatient Coder Transition Program
  • Certification in one of the following: RHIT, RHIA, CCS, CCA, CCS-P, CPC
  • Knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, DRG, APC coding systems, official coding guidelines, and compliance
  • Proficiency with electronic medical record and coding software
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
  • Strong English communication skills for interacting with patients, physicians, and team members
