Lead Outpatient Coder

At Houston Methodist, the Lead Outpatient Coder is responsible for providing administrative support to the department and accurately assigning diagnostic and procedure codes to outpatient encounters based on electronic medical record documentation, ensuring compliance with established rules and regulations. This role acts as a liaison among management, staff, and physicians to resolve routine issues and questions.

Key duties include organizing work schedules, creating assignments, reviewing timecards, conducting quality assurance audits, developing and implementing quality improvement activities, training and mentoring staff, providing performance feedback, data collection and analysis, and preparing performance reports.

The position requires strong leadership and communication skills, proficiency with coding classification systems (including ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, DRG, APC), electronic medical records, and coding software. The coder must maintain coding accuracy and adhere to ethical coding standards.

Additional responsibilities involve promoting a positive work environment, mentoring staff, coordinating schedules, responding to coding inquiries, initiating queries with physicians, maintaining coding quality, conducting audits, supporting financial goals related to account receivables, and identifying process improvements.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • Associate's degree or higher from a CAHIIM accredited program, or additional two years of relevant experience in lieu of degree
  • Minimum of five years of relevant outpatient coding experience
  • Certification required: RHIT (Certified Health Information Technician), RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator), or CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) from AHIMA
  • Proficiency with coding classification systems, electronic medical records, medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and electronic encoder applications
  • Strong interpersonal, teamwork, mentoring, leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Ability to multitask and manage workflow with minimal supervision
