Professional Coder III, Revenue Cycle Medical Group

At SGMC Health, the Professional Coder III abstracts ICD-10 and CPT codes for diagnosis and procedures related to professional medical services. This role involves reviewing and analyzing medical records to verify and accurately code diagnoses, evaluation and management services, minor procedures, and other required codes. The coder serves as a mentor to lower-level coders and communicates with management, practice managers, and providers to address documentation issues promptly. Responsibilities include coding principal diagnoses, co-morbidities, complications, therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, applicable supplies, medications, and injectable drugs. The coder also researches coding guidelines to ensure compliance and maintain accuracy standards of 95% or higher for CPT and ICD-10 coding. Continuing education and maintenance of CPC certification is required. The role demands strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to work under deadlines, organization, and teamwork. Knowledge of legal, regulatory, and policy compliance pertaining to medical coding, billing, and documentation is essential. Working conditions include prolonged computer use and stress management, with remote work possible given reliable high-speed internet and adherence to IT security policies.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS, CCS-P) required
  • Prior coding experience mandatory
  • Specialty certification through AAPC or AHIMA highly desired
  • Proficiency in multispecialty Evaluation & Management (E/M) and bedside procedure coding required
  • Proficiency in at least one specialty surgical coding; multispecialty surgical coding preferred
  • Experience in a physician office setting preferred
  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, ICD-10, HCPCS, and CPT required
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Time management skills
  • Initiative to improve quality and efficiency
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Teams
