The Hospital Coder applies knowledge of mandated inpatient coding and classification systems, selecting appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes (PCS), and other healthcare service codes. Responsibilities include sequencing codes to ensure legal optimal reimbursement. This fully remote role involves using computerized encoding systems, following ICD-10-CM/PCS, UHDDS, Medicare, Medicaid and fiscal intermediary guidelines. Supports external reporting requirements related to healthcare data elements, queries providers for documentation clarifications, and complies with ethical, legal, and internal coding policies. Participates in coding meetings, LEAN problem-solving activities, and assists with organizing the coding department shared drive.
- High School Diploma/G.E.D. required
- Coding certification/credential through AHIMA or AAPC and in good standing required
- Knowledge of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS
- Prior hospital medical coding experience preferred
- Experience with 3M 360 and EPIC systems preferred
- Must pass assessment with score ≥80%; new coders considered with higher scores
- Excellent computer skills and ability to navigate multiple systems
- Ability to work independently in a remote setting ensuring confidentiality
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Detail-oriented and efficient
- Equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted
