Senior Hospital Coder

Ochsner Health is seeking a Senior Hospital Coder responsible for reviewing and accurately coding and abstracting the most complex hospital services, including inpatient procedures and multi-night stay services. This role utilizes appropriate coding guidelines to assign ICD and CPT codes and complies with Medicare, Medicaid, and other payer guidelines to ensure accurate reimbursement. The position collaborates closely with the Clinical Documentation Improvement team to ensure accurate DRG assignments and works with management to resolve problems and meet deadlines.

Key responsibilities include assigning ICD-10 codes according to guidelines, ensuring data integrity by reviewing medical documentation, acting as a resource for researching patient accounts and errors, adhering to productivity and accuracy standards, collaborating with CDI nurses for documentation improvement, meeting departmental goals related to DNFB, Pre-AR, Denials, and Claim Edits, and verifying discharge disposition.

The role requires staying knowledgeable on federal, state, and local laws, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements, with adherence to compliance and privacy programs. Physical demands are light work, primarily sedentary with occasional exertion. There is no known occupational risk for communicable diseases; however, there may be potential exposure to hazardous medications or waste within the healthcare environment.

Requirements & Qualifications

Education:

  • Required: High School diploma or equivalent
  • Preferred: Completion of an AHIMA-accredited coding program with certification

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years coding experience

Certifications:

  • Must hold one of the following: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)

Skills:

  • Effective verbal and written communication
  • Computer skills including proficiency with Windows applications and specialized software
  • Knowledge of ICD-9-CM, ICD-10, and coding principles
  • Strong decision-making, problem-solving, analytical, and quality management capabilities
  • Proven ability to code complicated inpatient cases
