Certified Medical Records Coder - Inpatient

The County of Riverside - Riverside University Health System - Medical Records Department is seeking a Certified Medical Records Coder - Inpatient. This role involves advanced coding and abstracting of inpatient medical record entries according to ICD-CM, PCS, and CPT coding systems. The coder performs complex coding for a high volume of patient records and works closely with the Clinical Documentation Team and physicians. This position requires knowledge of inpatient coding guidelines and the Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS).

Work location: 7898 Mission Grove Pkwy Ste 200, Riverside, CA 92508

Work schedule includes a hybrid option with both in-office and remote work, possible swing shifts, weekends, and holiday shifts depending on operational needs. Standard hours are Monday to Friday, with alternative schedule options available.

Candidates with acute hospital inpatient coding experience using ICD-CM, PCS, and CPT coding are preferred. Certification as CCS, CPC, RHIA, RHIT, or CPC-H is required.

Key duties:

  • Code medical record entries for diagnoses and procedures using current classification systems.
  • Abstract patient information and assist clinical providers.
  • Query physicians for code clarification and communicate effectively.
  • Collaborate with Clinical Documentation Improvement Team to resolve documentation issues.
  • Provide coding training to outpatient coders as needed.
Requirements & Qualifications
  • Four years experience as a Certified Medical Records Coder - Outpatient with the County of Riverside, OR
  • Two years inpatient medical record coding experience in an acute care setting within the last four years.
  • Knowledge of ICD-CM, PCS, CPT coding systems, DRG assignment, anatomy, physiology, and disease study.
  • Ability to use coding books or encoder products, operate coding software, and effectively communicate with medical personnel.
  • Certification as CCS, CPC, RHIA, RHIT, or CPC-H from appropriate professional bodies.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical exam, drug/alcohol test, and background check including fingerprinting.
