Coder Abstractor - Neurosurgery

The Coder Abstractor is responsible for the charge capture process for professional charges, including verifying and analyzing medical records and encounter forms to determine principal and secondary diagnoses and procedures. Responsibilities include assigning diagnostic codes, procedural codes, and modifiers using CMS and internal guidelines, performing data entry and discrepancy resolution, acting as a liaison between the Central Billing Office and departments, assisting in training new employees, reviewing office-based charges for accuracy at a 95% accuracy rate, and interpreting physician documentation of surgical procedures for accurate billing codes. The role also involves identifying educational needs or compliance issues, resolving coding discrepancies related to revenue capture, and serving as an expert resource for coding and compliance inquiries.

Must have a minimum of two years neurosurgery coding experience. Fully remote position.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in Health Record Technology or related healthcare field with two years of professional coding experience and must obtain CPC, RHIT, or RHIA certification within 18 months
  • OR three years professional coding experience with CPC, RHIT, or RHIA certification obtained
  • OR four to five years of professional coding experience and must obtain CPC, RHIT, or RHIA certification within 18 months
