iMedX is accepting applications for experienced inpatient facility coders. Facility coders work on behalf of facilities and have extensive experience with DRG-based reimbursement for inpatient coding. This position is not for professional fee coders who code for physicians attending patients in inpatient care.
Full-time, part-time, and independent contractor statuses are considered. Applicants must have a minimum of 3 years of broad-based acute care inpatient coding experience and hold the requisite credentials demonstrating compliance with this requirement. This is a remote (work-from-home) position.
The Medical Coding Specialist abstracts clinical information from health records and assigns accurate and complete codes according to Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting and iMedX standards.
The Coding Specialist reports to the Coding Manager.
Key responsibilities include abstracting relevant clinical information from health records, identifying principal and secondary diagnoses based on Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting (OGCR), assigning ICD-10-CM codes to diagnoses, assigning ICD-10-PCS codes for procedures, understanding the impact of DRG-based reimbursement on inpatient coding, identifying when physician queries are necessary and composing such queries, communicating effectively with Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) staff, familiarity with facility data systems such as EPIC, Cerner, MediTech, and CPSI, and knowledge of coding software such as 3M and TruCODE.
The role requires meeting or exceeding coding quality standards, adhering to coding compliance, working efficiently and productively, referring coding questions to the Coding Manager for guidance, continually enhancing coding skills via team meetings and educational conferences, maintaining confidentiality and safeguarding protected health information (PHI), and promoting company values.
Educational requirements include a high school diploma or GED equivalent, completion of a formal coding program, with preferred certifications such as Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), or other AHIMA or AAPC-approved coding credentials.
Experience required is a minimum of three years coding work experience with working knowledge of ICD coding systems, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and health record content. The candidate should have attention to detail, intermediate computer skills, excellent customer service, and strong written and verbal communication skills.
