Certified Hospital Coder III

As a Certified Hospital Coder III at Novant Health, you will join the Corporate Coding team to support patient care through accurate coding and adherence to guidelines and regulations.

Responsibilities include:

  • Reviewing inpatient records to assign ICD-10-CM and PCS codes precisely according to official coding guidelines and compliance regulations.
  • Abstracting and entering required data from coded medical records into the EMR system.
  • Verifying discharge dispositions, dates of service, and admission status with correction processing as needed.
  • Ensuring medical necessity by coding all documented disease processes accurately in line with Corporate Compliance standards.
  • Conducting research on unfamiliar procedures and complex cases using resources such as AHA Coding Clinic, CPT Assistant, and The Merck Manual.
  • Communicating with physicians for documentation clarification using approved procedures, consistently meeting productivity benchmarks.
  • Maintaining professional credentials and demonstrating continuous learning through ongoing education and review of updated coding practices.
  • Communicating effectively via email, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and phone; participating in multidisciplinary team meetings.
Requirements & Qualifications
  • Required licensure: CCA, CCS, CCS-P, CPC, COC, CIC, RHIA, or RHIT.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 3 years coding experience.
  • Knowledge of ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines and CPT classification system, including diagnosis and procedure selection, coding sequencing, and hierarchical condition code capture.
  • Advanced knowledge of Medical Terminology, Anatomy, Physiology, and Pharmacology.
  • Basic computer skills for data entry, email, and Windows-based software navigation.
  • Ability to work independently and follow departmental problem-solving guidelines.
  • Ability to work overtime during peak volume or need periods.
  • Physical ability to sit and concentrate for extended periods, with manual dexterity for keyboard/mouse use.
  • Preferred: inpatient coding experience (acute or physician-based).
