Inpatient Coder

At Houston Methodist, the Inpatient Coder position is responsible for accurately assigning diagnostic and procedure codes to inpatient encounters based on electronic medical record documentation. The role ensures compliance with coding rules, official guidelines, and regulatory standards.

Qualifications include an Associate’s degree or higher from a CAHIIM accredited program or equivalent experience, plus one year of relevant inpatient coding experience or completion of specific coding transition programs. Certifications required: RHIT, RHIA, or CCS from AHIMA.

Key skills include knowledge of coding classification systems (ICD-10-CM/PCS), DRG and APC systems, official coding guidelines, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and proficiency with electronic health records and coding software.

The role involves collaboration with coding teams and stakeholders, timely response to coding requests, query initiation with physicians for clarifications, and maintaining high coding quality standards. Adherence to ethical coding standards is mandatory.

Additional responsibilities include meeting departmental productivity standards, supporting accounts receivable goals by ensuring timely coding, and participating in ongoing performance evaluation and quality improvement initiatives.

Travel within and outside the Houston Metropolitan area may be required. Business professional attire is expected, with no uniform or scrubs required. On-call duty is not required except during emergencies.
