Coder/Abstractor - Outpatient Level II

This position is responsible for coding and abstracting medical records for outpatient hospital services, including same-day surgery, observation, emergency department, clinic services, infusion center, and diagnostic testing.

Responsibilities include:

  • Adherence to WPH performance standards and policies
  • Accurate code assignment following ICD-10 CM, CPT-4, HCPCS, and modifiers
  • Analyzing medical records to identify appropriate coding and sequencing
  • Reviewing local and national coverage determinations for accuracy
  • Querying physicians for documentation clarification
  • Limited charge correction and validation
  • Effective interdepartmental communication
  • Proficiency with spreadsheets and independence in work
  • Abstracting data accurately into health information systems
  • Meeting quality and productivity standards
  • Staying current with coding changes, HIM best practices, and payer guidelines
  • Using Microsoft applications and HIM software like 3M 360 coding applications and Optum Lynx
  • Participating in staff and educational meetings
  • Completing annual competency requirements

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required; associate's degree preferred
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) and/or Certified Professional Coder (CPC) required if hired after 1/1/2025
  • Minimum two years of coding experience in Health Information Management preferred
  • Knowledge of ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, CPT-4, medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology required

  • Ability to maintain concentration amid distractions
  • Stationary work for extended periods (95%)
  • Use of standard office equipment and troubleshooting computer systems

The role serves various populations including neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric, and others across diverse special needs.

Salary range: $53,840.67 to $80,782.07 annually.
