Coder IP/OP - Health Information Management

McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center is a 113-bed hospital serving the Willamette Valley community, providing inpatient, outpatient, diagnostic, medical, surgical, and emergency care.

This role involves abstracting and coding from all types of inpatient and outpatient medical records, to supply accurate, timely, and complete data supporting quality assurance, statistical data collection, and the billing process. The coder will analyze medical records in detail to assign diagnosis and procedure codes per ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 national guidelines and select the principal diagnosis according to coding standards.

The position requires a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) credential with at least one year of current hospital coding experience. Knowledge of ICD-9-CM, CPT-4 coding, medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and disease processes is essential. The coder must be computer literate with Windows OS functionality awareness.

Additional duties involve maintaining concentration for extended periods, adhering to compliance programs, protecting patient confidentiality, possessing ten-key data entry skills, utilizing reporting software, assisting with performance improvement activities, demonstrating medical records knowledge, and effective time management while working independently.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • RHIT or CCS credential
  • Minimum one year of current hospital coding experience
  • In-depth knowledge of ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 coding
  • Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and disease processes
  • Computer literate with Windows OS knowledge

  • Ten-key number pad proficiency
  • Adherence to compliance and patient confidentiality standards
  • Knowledge of medical records practices
