Surgical Coder - Spine Specialty

Spire Orthopedic Partners is a national partnership of orthopedic practices supporting physicians to grow thriving practices focusing on patient care. This Surgical Coder role specializes in complex orthopedic spine procedures coding, ensuring accurate CPT and ICD-10 coding, minimizing denials, and enhancing documentation quality.

Key responsibilities include coding complex spine surgeries (fusions, decompressions, instrumentation), verifying documentation completeness, assigning codes for reimbursements and compliance, conducting denial prevention and root cause analysis, performing pre-bill quality reviews for high-dollar and complex cases, partnering with surgeons to improve documentation, overseeing vendor coding quality, and supporting appeals for coding-related denials.

The role requires a CPC, CCS, or equivalent certification, 5+ years of surgical coding experience with 3+ years in spine surgery coding, deep knowledge of NCCI edits, modifier usage, spine-specific CPT nuances, and documentation requirements. Preferred qualifications include COSC specialty certification, experience in high-volume orthopedic/spine practices, and familiarity with ModMed or athenahealth.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • CPC, CCS, or equivalent certification (AAPC or AHIMA)
  • 5+ years surgical coding experience
  • 3+ years focused on spine surgery coding
  • Deep knowledge of NCCI edits, bundling rules, modifier usage, and spine-specific CPT coding nuances
  • Documentation requirements knowledge for Evaluation and Management services
  • Experience in orthopedic or multi-specialty groups preferred
  • Excellent organization and multitasking skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, results-driven environment

Preferred:

  • COSC specialty certification (AAPC)
  • Experience in high-volume orthopedic/spine practice
  • Exposure to vendor-managed RCM environments
  • Familiarity with systems like ModMed or athenahealth
