The Coder is responsible for reviewing, interpreting, and assigning appropriate CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS codes, and ensuring compliance with federal regulations and payer policies. This position reviews operative reports for all procedures performed by Excelsior Orthopaedic Physicians for completeness and abstracts and codes clinical data using standard classification systems.
Duties include reviewing and auditing physician documentation and surgical reports to assign diagnosis and procedure codes for orthopedic services, ensuring compliance with coding guidelines and payer policies, communicating with providers to ensure accurate documentation, monitoring coding edits and denials, assisting with appeals, collaborating with billing teams, staying current with coding guidelines, entering charge data accurately, and preparing insurance claims. Additional responsibilities may be assigned.
Requirements:
- Associate degree preferred; HS diploma or GED required
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or equivalent required
- Minimum 1 year coding experience
- Knowledge of EHR/EMR and coding software preferred
- Familiarity with orthopedic, physical therapy, or podiatry terminology desirable
- Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
The position involves mostly sedentary work with some standing, walking, and occasional lifting up to 10 pounds.
