Education:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent required
- Associate's Degree in related field preferred
Experience:
- 2 years professional coding experience
- Completion of advanced level training in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, or similar required
Licenses and Certifications:
- CPC - Certified Professional Coder or
- CCS-P - Certified Coding Specialist - Physician-based upon hire required
- Other specialty certification such as CGSC, COSC, CCC, preferred
Required Skills:
- Advanced knowledge of procedural and clinical diagnosis coding for professional billing
- Knowledge of third-party regulations and payer billing requirements
- Effective communication skills
- Detail oriented with strong organizational skills
- Strong work ethic and professionalism
- Proficient computer skills and ability to learn internal applications
Responsibilities:
- Accurately abstract information from medical records and assign professional fee codes using ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS in compliance with guidelines
- Review supporting medical records to ensure accurate code assignment and maintain documentation
- Perform charge reconciliation and identify discrepancies with facility charges
- Collaborate with practice staff and providers to complete coding and correct charges
- Participate in special projects including charge correction requests, payor policy research, accounts receivable and denials management
