Certified Coder Specialist

Under general supervision and according to established procedures, assign diagnostic codes to medical record information.

Use ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS (HCPCS) coding systems for statistical and DRG assignment purposes.

Abstract required data into hospital abstracting systems to inform hospital database and reimbursement of claims.

Review patient records timely to identify accurate codes reflecting admission reason, extent of care, and severity of illness.

Maintain regulatory compliance with state, federal, and Joint Commission guidelines relevant to Health Information Services.

Uphold patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA policies using minimum necessary information.

Analyze medical records, assign correct ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and HCPCS codes, sequence data per official guidelines, and assign DRG codes for reimbursement.

Consult physicians to clarify documentation and resolve coding inadequacies.

Provide coding support and education to physicians and ancillary departments.

Maintain professional growth through attending seminars, updating coding books, and staying current with coding developments.

Manage aged accounts and collaborate with supervisors and HIS staff to ensure all accounts are coded timely.

Requirements & Qualifications

High School diploma or GED required. Equivalent to an associate degree in medical terminology preferred, including coursework in medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, disease processes, ICD-10-CM coding, and prospective payment. Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification required. Eligibility for RHIT or RHIA designation preferred. Minimum one year of experience coding ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT-4 in an acute care facility. Excellent customer service, critical thinking, verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, maintain confidentiality, and manage stress effectively. Basic computer literacy and ability to perform light physical activity as specified. Familiarity with OSHA guidelines and HIPAA compliance. Ability to work collaboratively with physicians and other staff.
