This position is within the Facility Support Directorate, Patient Administration Department, Health Information Management section at the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center (FHCC). Medical Records Technicians (Coders) classify medical data from patient health records in hospital or physician-based settings.
Key duties include:
- Applying comprehensive knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, disease processes, diagnostic tests, medications, procedures, and health services organizational structure for proper code selection.
- Selecting and assigning codes from ICD, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
- Adhering to accepted coding guidelines for diagnoses, procedures, and Evaluation and Management codes.
- Monitoring regulatory and policy requirements affecting coded information for the VA Medical Center.
- Abstracting medical and administrative data from patient health records to ensure complete data capture for budgeting, accreditation, billing, and research.
- Assisting staff with documentation requirements, providing technical support, and ensuring complete provider documentation.
- Using various computer applications including VistA, CPRS, and encoder products.
- Supervising staff: developing performance standards, conducting evaluations, training, approving leave, and implementing EEO programs.
- Scheduling workflow, preparing reports, coordinating with other service representatives, and ensuring compliance with coding regulations.
Work schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm CST. Telework: Ad-hoc as determined by agency policy.
Requirements:
- U.S. Citizenship.
- Mastery level coding certification (CCS, CCS-P, RHIT, RHIA, CPC, COC, CIC).
- One year specialized experience at GS-9 level performing supervisory duties of coding staff and program management.
- Proficiency in English, background investigation, and completion of an online assessment.
- Physical work demands typical of an office setting.
