Outpatient Coding Specialist - Surgery

You will assign diagnosis and procedure codes using ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS on all episodes of care in emergency department, same-day surgery, outpatient clinic, observation, inpatient OB/newborn, and specialty clinic encounters according to coding guidelines and hospital policy. Ensure compliance with official guidelines (ICD-10-CM, AHA Coding Clinic, AMA CPT Assistant), AHIMA Standards of Ethical Coding, and LifePoint Health policies.

Responsibilities include achieving and maintaining 95% accuracy in quality reviews, applying knowledge of Ambulatory Payment Categories (APCs), OPPS, NCCI, and medical necessity/compliance guidelines. Verify, edit, and enter charges based on documentation or payer billing. Submit physician queries as needed for documentation clarification. Maintain professional relationships with medical staff, assist training other coders, implement departmental recommendations, and participate in required educational activities.

Maintain coding credentials and complete all compliance courses. Adhere to AHIMA’s Code of Ethics and maintain confidentiality.

Position is fully remote with flexible shifts to complete 40 hours per week across U.S. time zones.

Requirements & Qualifications

Associate degree in health-related field preferred.

Minimum of one year outpatient coding experience in an acute care hospital preferred.

Certifications preferred: Certified Coding Associate (CCA), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).

Authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.
