The Coding Specialist - Remote position is responsible for converting diagnoses and treatment procedures into codes using ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes. This role includes sequencing diagnoses and procedures for health statistics, long-term planning, and reimbursement. The specialist ensures all records are coded accurately and timely and performs medical record abstraction.
Candidates should have 1 to 3 years of professional fee coding experience, including multi-specialty coding (ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, HCPCS) for inpatient and outpatient settings within a Health Information Management department at an acute care hospital or physician practice. Experience with medical record abstraction and using an encoder is required.
Educational requirements include a High School Diploma or equivalent, and certification such as CPC, CCS, CCS-P, RHIT, or RHIA.
Knowledge required:
- State, Federal, HIPAA regulations
- CMS record requirements and coding guidelines
- Medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology
- Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office
Strong customer service, communication, organizational skills, and professionalism are essential. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with high attention to confidentiality and integrity.
Preferred qualifications include graduation from an accredited Health Information Technology program and bilingual English-Spanish skills.
