The Inpatient Medical Coder accurately codes hospital inpatient accounts to ensure proper reimbursement, research, statistics, and compliance with federal and state regulations using ICD-10-CM/PCS coding classification systems. Responsibilities include analyzing inpatient cases to assign ICD-10 diagnostic and procedural codes, ensuring accurate MS-DRG and APR-DRG assignments, utilizing critical thinking to address documentation issues, communicating with medical and clinical staff, monitoring work to facilitate timely billing, maintaining high accuracy to prevent claim denials and billing errors, reviewing medical records to extract information for coding, complying with AHIMA ethical standards and HIPAA privacy regulations, using coding references, software tools, and EHR systems for coding, and participating in ongoing education and training.

Supports and complies with Luminis Health's mission, vision, values, goals, and policies. Performs additional duties such as coding corrections as assigned.

Requirements & Qualifications

Minimum education: High school diploma or equivalent; formal ICD-10-CM and CPT training required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred.

Experience: At least 2 years of inpatient ICD-10-CM/ICD-10-PCS coding and abstracting experience in an acute care hospital setting required. Experience with MS-DRG/APR-DRG methodologies and inpatient reimbursement preferred.

Certifications: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) required. Preferred certifications include Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).

Skills: Strong analytical and organizational abilities; ability to prioritize and meet deadlines; excellent customer service skills; knowledge of general office procedures; problem-solving ability; familiarity with basic medical terminology; computer proficiency; typing skills.
