The HIM Coding Specialist II is responsible for translating healthcare diagnostic and procedural information into coded form by reviewing patient health records. Qualifications include certification such as CCS, RHIA, RHIT from AHIMA; or CPC, COC, CIC, CIRCC from AAPC; or RCC from Radiology Coding Certification Board. A high school diploma is required; associate's degree and coding training (anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT) are preferred. Required experience is one to two years of coding, with preference for three or more years, including outpatient Interventional Radiology coding if applicable.
Key responsibilities:
- Code and abstract diagnoses, procedures, and patient data from outpatient (including ambulatory surgeries) and potentially inpatient encounters.
- Verify accuracy and completeness of hospital information.
- Prioritize inpatient and outpatient coding duties to maintain current records.
- Communicate with physicians for clarifications.
- Maintain coding proficiency through continuing education and keep updated with coding policies.
- Provide care and services appropriate to the patient population.
