Hospice Coding Specialist

This position will train on site and eventually have a remote and/or hybrid remote working option. Part Time initially with potential for full time hours as needs grow. Applicants must be located in or around the Northwest Arkansas area and able to participate in onsite training and meetings.

The Hospice Coding Specialist accurately codes and abstracts individual patient medical records for applying appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes for data retrieval, analysis, and claims processing.

Must be experienced with electronic medical records (EMR) and/or electronic health records (EHR), proficient in computer skills, knowledgeable of Official Coding Guidelines, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, and CPT codes. Demonstrates attention to detail, works independently and in a team, represents Circle of Life positively, and shows flexibility and a positive attitude. Compassion, empathy, and patience required when interacting with patients, families, co-workers, and the public.

Duties include abstracting relevant information from patient records into EMR, assigning ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes in compliance with official guidelines and CMS regulations, querying physicians for clarification when documentation is unclear, staying knowledgeable of coding guidelines and reimbursement requirements, and performing other assigned duties.

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. Certification: CPC, CCS, CIC, RHIT, RHIA, or other nationally recognized coding certification covering ICD-10-CM and CPT required. Experience: Minimum two years as a coder or strong training background in coding and reimbursement preferred.

Physical demands involve extensive desk and computer use with occasional light lifting.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Certifications such as CPC, CCS, CIC, RHIT, RHIA or other nationally recognized coding certifications covering ICD-10-CM and CPT
  • Minimum two years experience as a coder or strong training background in coding and reimbursement preferred
  • Experience with EMR/EHR systems
  • Proficiency in computer skills
  • Knowledge of Official Coding Guidelines, ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes
  • Attention to detail and ability to work independently and in a team
  • Strong communication skills and professionalism
  • Compassion and patience in interactions with patients and families
