Responsible for coding and abstracting inpatient accounts in accordance with coding guidelines.

Assign accurate diagnostic and procedure codes according to clinical documentation and official coding guidelines for inpatient hospital accounts. Coordinate with the clinical documentation and quality teams to validate Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Group (MSDRG), patient safety indicators, and hospital acquired conditions supported by physician documentation. Monitor assigned work queues to ensure timely charging of all records. Generate coding queries for clarification regarding physician documentation as needed. Stay abreast of changes in coding conventions and coding updates.

Education: Associate's degree or equivalent experience.

Experience: Two years inpatient coding experience. CCS, RHIA and/or RHIT preferred.

Physical requirements include frequent lifting/carrying objects weighing 0-25 lbs, frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching, repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements, frequent use of vision and depth perception, frequent use of hearing and speech, frequent keyboard use/data entry, occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting and gripping, occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs, rare climbing.

Required certifications (one of): Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC), Certified Professional Coder (CPC®), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).

Work shift: Day shift.

  • Associate's degree or equivalent experience
  • Two years inpatient coding experience
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC), or Certified Professional Coder (CPC®) preferred or required
  • Ability to assign accurate diagnostic and procedure codes
  • Knowledge of Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Group (MSDRG), patient safety indicators, and hospital acquired conditions
  • Good communication skills for generating coding queries
  • Physical ability to perform frequent lifting, sitting, standing, walking, reaching, and data entry
