The Coding Specialist role involves performing accurate diagnostic and procedural coding for outpatient and/or inpatient medical records within a multi-specialty organization. The position ensures compliance with industry coding standards, meets productivity, quality, and timeliness benchmarks, and acts as a resource and subject matter expert for staff.
Responsibilities include:
- Performing abstracting and coding functions in multi-specialty or place of service organizations
- Assigning diagnostic and procedure codes and modifiers to medical records
- Maintaining timeliness, productivity, and quality standards
- Utilizing industry standards of practice in coding and auditing
- Serving as a resource and expert to other staff
- Completing other duties as assigned by management
Required qualifications and skills:
- Coding Certification required; RHIA Certification preferred
- Minimum of 3 years of outpatient coding experience preferred
- Bachelor's Degree preferred
- General knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Knowledge of 3M Coding Software
- High ethical and professional standards
- Strong time management and organizational skills
- High attention to detail and ability to multi-task
- Capacity to work independently and in a team environment
