Inpatient Coder

The Health Information Management Coder Inpatient Level 2 role provides timely and accurate clinical and administrative data to ensure optimal reimbursement for inpatient, rehab, and/or skilled nursing coding supporting facility needs. Primary patient contact is social only.

This position requires adherence to current coding rules and regulations including inpatient coding, DRG/APR-DRG assignment, rehab coding, skilled care coding, CMG assignment, IRFPAI completion, inpatient coding CCI edits, and POA assignment to ensure quality coding based upon patient records.

Coders review charts from neonatal to geriatric care, medical, surgical, critical care, and trauma cases, applying thorough review of clinical information to identify principal diagnosis, secondary diagnoses, procedures, comorbid conditions, complications, and their impact on DRG/APR-DRG assignment. Queries may be sent to providers for clarification where documentation is unclear.

Supports Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) programs by reviewing charts and working closely with CDI staff. May collaborate with external vendors on audits, projects, or issue resolution.

Responsibilities also include coding denials review, appeals, denial entry, writing appeal letters, quality reviews, training new staff, mentoring students, and assisting with software upgrades.

Maintains professional credentials and adheres to HIPAA privacy and security regulations.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • RHIA, RHIT, or CCS credential required.
  • Bachelor or Associate Degree graduates considered with expectation of passing the national exam.
  • Prefer acute care inpatient coding experience including ICD10CM/ICD10PCS.
  • Knowledge of clinical documentation for inpatient coding preferred.
  • Basic computer skills including EMR, 3M encoder, Lawson, Word, Excel.
  • Ability to work under stress, meet deadlines, prioritize work, and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to apply coding guidelines, federal and state regulations, and hospital policies judiciously.
  • Ability to sit for long periods and perform computer-based tasks.
