This position involves accurately coding and abstracting outpatient medical records for reimbursement and statistical purposes using established coding guidelines. Responsibilities include:
- Coding outpatient medical records timely and accurately per department policy.
- Translating verbal descriptions of diseases, injuries, and procedures into numerical codes using ICD-10-CM and CPT-4.
- Initiating physician/department queries for conflicting, incomplete, or ambiguous documentation.
- Entering required information into computer systems for reimbursement and statistics.
- Staying current with Federal, State, regulatory, and hospital-specific coding guidelines.
- Ensuring accuracy of code selection by applying guidelines.
- Researching reference materials to support coding decisions.
- Mentoring less experienced coding staff.
- Participating in performance improvement and quality assurance activities.
- Reporting software and hardware issues.
- Attending educational sessions to maintain and enhance coding certifications.
- Modeling organizational values and demonstrating reliable attendance.
Qualifications include:
- Associate degree or equivalent.
- Knowledge of ICD-10, CPT-4, disease pathology, anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
- Advanced expertise in evaluation and management coding guidelines.
- Six years of coding experience.
- Familiarity with MS Office applications.
- Use of coding manuals and regulatory websites for research.
- Certification from AAPC or AHIMA (CPC, CPC-H, CCS, CCS-P, RHIA, RHIT, or specialty certifications).
- Additional specialty certification required (e.g., CGSC, CASC, CCVTC).
Work Type: Full-Time, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday.
Salary is offered as an hourly rate ($31.85/hr flat rate per CBA).
- Reside in AL, AZ, CO, CT, DE, FL, GA, IL, IN, KS, MA, MD, ME, MI, MS, NC, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA.
- Valid certifications: CPC, CPC-H, CCS, CCS-P, RHIA, RHIT, or specialty.
- Specialty certification mandatory.
- Minimum six years of outpatient coding experience.
- Proficient in ICD-10-CM, CPT-4, and evaluation/management guidelines.
- Competent in medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and disease pathology.
- Ability to mentor others and work independently.
- Computer skills including MS Office and coding software.
Additional desirable qualifications include commitment to continuing education to maintain certifications.
