Medical Coding Specialist

The role involves coding patient diagnoses and procedures using ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, E/M, HCPCS, and AIS to translate medical records into alpha-numeric codes. Responsibilities include analyzing medical records, identifying documentation deficiencies, communicating with staff for coding clarifications, preparing statistical reports, and maintaining knowledge of coding guidelines and regulations. When assigned to Trauma Registry, duties include submitting trauma information to state and national databases. The position requires accuracy, attention to detail, and understanding of medical terminology and legal coding rules.

Requirements & Qualifications

Associate's Degree in Medical Record Science, Health Information Technology, or related field, or a certificate in medical coding. Must have or obtain certifications such as RHIA, RHIT, CHIM, CCS, CPC (or CPC-A with completion within 27 months), or CCA (if appointed before July 2022). For Trauma Program assignment, completion of Trauma Registry and Abbreviated Injury Scale courses within 36 months, ICD-10 refresher every 5 years, and 8 trauma-related CE credits per year. Degree must be accredited or verified for equivalency for foreign degrees.
