In this position, the candidate analyzes medical records to extract clinical, pathological, therapeutic, and epidemiologic data for inpatient and/or outpatient records following ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT coding guidelines. Responsibilities include abstracting and coding medical information for billing and statistical analysis, ensuring POA indicators are correctly assigned, adhering to compliance policies, requesting physician queries for unclear documentation, collaborating with clinical documentation specialists, and maintaining up-to-date coding certification. The role requires working on site at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport, NY, covering all shifts.
The hospital provides comprehensive healthcare services including behavioral health, medical-surgical, orthopedics, general surgery, and more, and is a clinical campus and training site for Stony Brook Medicine.
Candidates must undergo pre-employment physical, medical clearance, drug screening, and reference checks.
Must have coding certification such as CCS, CCA, or CPC. Knowledge of electronic medical records and coding software like 3M or Encoder. Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and coding processes. Knowledge of MS DRG prospective payment system and severity systems. Ability to concentrate for long periods and make independent decisions. Preferred hospital-based coding experience and electronic medical record system proficiency.
