The Financial Coding Specialist reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.
You will be responsible for translating diagnoses and diagnostic/therapeutic procedures into codes using ICD and CPT systems. The role involves generating accurate insurance claims, verifying infusion documentation and charges, ensuring appropriate modifiers are added, and resolving inquiries from Revenue Cycle Departments efficiently.
Responsibilities include managing workflow efficiently, contributing to continuous improvement processes, following ethical coding standards per AHIMA Code of Ethics, thoroughly reviewing medical records, interpreting coding conventions and selecting appropriate diagnoses and procedures with high accuracy, managing financial processes within Oncology, performing nurse/MD documentation QA, educating staff on coding and documentation, processing requests from Coding Department, updating charge master, assisting with physician billing, and collaborating effectively with various hospital departments.
You will stay updated on coding changes (ICD-9 and CPT) and effectively utilize systems like EPIC and CareManager, embracing new technology to improve workflow.
Qualifications:
- Minimum six months coding experience in oncology.
- Two years of physician and/or hospital billing including infusion billing.
- Thorough understanding of Medicaid, HMOs, PPOs, and private insurance.
- Knowledge of ICD9, CPT, and chemotherapy infusion billing.
- Strong problem-solving, keyboarding, and data entry skills.
- Ability to multitask and collaborate in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred:
- Associate's degree or Certified Coding Specialist Physician (CCSP).
- Certified Coder (CERT CODER).
- Six months coding experience in oncology.
- Two years physician and/or hospital billing including infusion billing.
- Knowledge of ICD9, CPT, chemotherapy infusion billing.
- Understanding Medicaid, HMO, PPO, private insurance.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Above average keyboarding and data entry.
- Ability to multitask in fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work collaboratively with physicians and staff.
Preferred:
- Associate's degree or CCSP.
- Certified coder credentials.
