The Virtual Lead Coding Specialist role is focused on improving quality audit scores for coders by conducting quality reviews, identifying improvement opportunities, facilitating education and training plans, and collaborating with Coding Integrity Quality and Compliance teams to reduce audit and denial risks related to coding and billing.
This position involves directing coding staff on coding integrity, coding guidelines, and organizational policies to ensure accurate patientMedical information and proper reimbursement.
Key responsibilities include:
- Conducting ad hoc coding quality reviews
- Identifying coding trend opportunities and facilitating improvement action plans
- Coaching coders on ICD-10-CM/PCS coding and abstracting
- Reviewing coded charts, providing feedback, and monitoring corrections
- Assigning diagnosis and procedure codes to inpatient encounters
- Abstracting statistical data from medical records
- Verifying, editing, or entering charges in collaboration with clinical staff
- Staying current on developments in coding standards and regulations
This is a fully virtual role supporting internal and external coding quality and compliance in a large hospital system.
- High school diploma required
- Successful completion of an approved coding program or Health Information Management degree
- Minimum of 4 years coding experience in acute care hospital and clinic settings
- Certification required: One of RHIT, RHIA, CCS, CCS-P (AHIMA) or CPC, CIC (AAPC)
- Must score a minimum of 85% on a pre-employment coding test or have proven 95% coding accuracy at Parkland
- Advanced knowledge of ICD-9/ICD-10-CM/PCS coding, MS-DRG, reimbursement principles, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology
- Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills
- Proficient with MS Office and Computer Assisted Coding (CAC) software
