The Certified Outpatient Coding Specialist role involves coding and abstracting all pertinent patient medical information according to AHA ICD-10-CM/PCS and AMA CPT-4 coding conventions, UHDDS guidelines, and CMS directives. Responsibilities include data entry of abstracted inpatient/outpatient diagnosis and procedure codes into the health information system with collaboration across Health Information/Medical Records, Admissions, and Finance departments.
Key duties:
- Code and abstract diagnosis and procedure info from medical records following coding conventions and guidelines
- Use 3M Encoder for code verification and assignment
- Maintain 95% data quality coding accuracy through quarterly audits
- Meet productivity and turnaround times per department performance plan
- Keep updated knowledge on coding conventions, DRG principles, and prospective payment systems
- Participate in meetings, education sessions, and workshops
- Possess working knowledge of clinical documentation improvement programs and liaise with RN clinical documentation specialists
Physical demands include prolonged sitting and extensive computer use with repetitive arm/finger movements and vision use.
Education and experience:
- RHIA, RHIT, CCS, and/or CPC credential or 3+ years coding experience
- Expected to obtain AHIMA/AAPC credential within three years if not already credentialed
- Minimum 1 year inpatient/outpatient ICD-10-CM coding experience in acute care teaching setting
- Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and medical terminology
- Preferred experience with EPIC electronic health records and 3M encoding system
Work schedule is day shift with possible other hours and weekend rotations.
