The Inpatient Medical Coder under the supervision of the Manager of Coding and Data Quality accurately codes hospital inpatient accounts for appropriate reimbursement, research, statistics, and compliance to federal and state regulations using ICD-10-CM/PCS coding systems.

Key responsibilities include analyzing inpatient cases, assigning accurate ICD-10 diagnostic and procedural codes, utilizing critical thinking to resolve documentation issues, maintaining high accuracy to prevent billing errors and denials, reviewing medical records for extracting coding information, communicating billing and registration issues within hospital departments, and adhering to ethical coding standards and HIPAA privacy regulations.

The role requires participation in ongoing education and coding proficiency programs and supporting organizational goals and policies.

Required education and experience include a high school diploma or equivalent, formal ICD-10-CM and CPT training (associate or bachelor's degree preferred), and at least two years of inpatient ICD-10-CM/PCS coding experience in an acute care hospital. Certification as a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) is required, with RHIT or RHIA preferred.

Strong analytical, organizational, computer, and communication skills are necessary. The position involves light physical work and minimal exposure to blood-borne pathogens is expected.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Formal ICD-10-CM and CPT training required; associate's or bachelor's degree preferred
  • At least two years inpatient ICD-10-CM/PCS coding and abstracting experience in an acute care hospital
  • Experience with MS-DRG/APR-DRG methodologies and inpatient reimbursement guidelines preferred
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification required; RHIT or RHIA preferred
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills, ability to meet deadlines and work effectively under pressure
  • Excellent customer service skills and problem-solving abilities
  • Familiar with basic medical terminology
  • Computer proficiency and typing ability
  • Adherence to AHIMA ethical coding and HIPAA privacy regulations
