Medical Coding Externship (Remote)

PAM Health

Perform coding and abstracting of inpatient and outpatient medical records in accordance with ICD-10-CM and CPT coding rules, guidelines, and conventions.

This externship is 90 days in length, scheduled Monday through Friday for 8 hours per day.

The role supports hospital and PAM Health system procedures, with coding that accurately reflects the reason for admission, extent of care received, and level of severity of illness.

Requirements & Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Preferred education or training:

  • Coding, medical terminology, and anatomy/physiology coursework
  • One or more of the following credentials preferred:
    • CCS
    • CCS-P
    • CPC
    • CPC-A
    • CBCS
    • CCA
    • RHIT
    • RHIA
    • RN with ICD-9-CM coding background
    • LPN with ICD-9-CM coding background
  • Experience as a coder while currently pursuing one of the above credentials may be considered

Additional qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years of coding experience preferred
  • Knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, disease processes, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, and laboratory terminology
  • Familiarity with ICD-10-CM Official Conventions and ICD-9-CM/CPT Guidelines for Coding and Reporting
  • Ability to assign diagnosis and procedure codes using the 3M coding application
  • Familiarity with IRF-PAI preferred
  • Accurate data entry and computer skills
  • Strong communication skills with customers, families, staff, management, physicians, and the public
  • Ability to follow directions, work independently, and handle repetitive detail-oriented work
  • Understanding of HIPAA regulations
  • Familiarity with TJC, state regulations, and legal aspects of the medical record
