Coder I / HCC Risk Adjustment

The Coder I is responsible for conducting accurate, compliant, and complete diagnosis code abstraction for Medicare, Commercial, and Medicaid risk-adjustment programs across a variety of chart types. This role applies ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines, AHA Coding Clinic guidance, and Cotiviti/client-specific requirements to ensure high-quality coding outcomes. The Coder I uses established dispute-resolution processes when coding disagreements arise and communicates professionally with team leadership regarding findings, errors, and improvement opportunities.

This is a remote, full-time permanent position for multiple Risk Adjustment / HCC Coders (Coder 1).

Requirements & Qualifications

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Nationally certified coder in good standing through AAPC or AHIMA (CRC, CPC, CCS, etc.).
  • 1-2 years of experience in medical risk adjustment / HCC coding.
  • Experience with HCC record abstraction and coding requirements.
  • Demonstrated high quality accuracy and productivity in clinical coding work.
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy and physiology.
  • Intermediate computer skills and ability to use a designated coding platform.
  • Strong organization and time management skills.
  • Ability to read and understand medical record documentation for diagnosis extraction.
  • Must maintain professional credential in good standing as required by AAPC and/or AHIMA.
  • Must comply with HIPAA and patient confidentiality requirements.
  • Required training hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM ET.
  • Required working hours: 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday, daytime schedule based on time zone; not intended for nights, weekends, or part-time work.
  • Ability to achieve over 95% quality accuracy.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines.
  • Must be able to provide a dedicated, secure work area and high-speed internet access.

Compensation and benefits

  • Base compensation: $23.00 to $26.50 per hour.
  • Eligible for discretionary bonus consideration.
  • Overtime pay for nonexempt hours worked over 40 per week, or as required by law.
