Under general supervision, the Medical Records Technician assists in analyzing, coding, and compiling medical records for patients treated at City and County medical facilities. The role may also support medical staff in selecting cases for research projects and supervise clerical staff in the Medical Records Department.
Key duties include:
- Training and mentoring assigned clerical personnel and helping develop workflow and production standards
- Serving as a liaison with medical providers, managers, and requestors regarding medical record information
- Reviewing records for deficiencies and documentation completeness in accordance with information management standards
- Managing complex eFax workflows
- Coding diseases and procedures using ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT for billing, data, research, and record retrieval
- Assembling, analyzing, and checking medical records for compliance with policy and procedure
- Abstracting information for statistical indexing and summary reports
- Assisting with medical staff research projects
- Preparing records for court when required
- Consulting with doctors, nurses, and other personnel to maintain accurate medical records
Requirements & Qualifications
- One year of experience within the last five years performing medical information abstraction, coding, or release of medical information
- Valid Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification
- RHIA certification may substitute for both the required experience and RHIT certification
- For some positions, additional trauma registrar or cancer registrar-related certifications may be required within 12 months of hire, including:
- AAAM AIS Course Certificate
- Trauma registry course certificate
- ICD-10 course certificate dated within the past five years
- Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) credential
