The Abstractor is responsible for reviewing inpatient and outpatient medical records and abstracting required data into the Cerner abstracting system before and after coding has been completed.
The role performs both pre-abstracting and post-abstracting based on assigned responsibilities. The Abstractor ensures discharge disposition accuracy, confirms the inpatient admission order is present, gathers additional information needed prior to finalizing the abstract, and works with Coding and Audit/Compliance as needed. Additional tasks may be assigned as necessary.
Education
- High school diploma required
Experience
- Prior HIM experience working with analysis, coding support, or document imaging required
- Coding course completion preferred
Skills
- Visual acuity to read handwriting and electronic documentation
- Competency with computers and various software programs
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to interpret medical record data and assign appropriate codes for accurate reimbursement
- Understanding of ICD-10-PCS and ICD-10-CM classification systems
Licensure / Certification
- AHIMA credential CCS preferred
- AAPC credential COC or CPC preferred
