Responsibilities
The Medical Records Clerk maintains the proper handling, organization, and preservation of all detainee/inmate medical records and provides clerical support as directed.
Primary duties
- File all medical records in alphabetical order using a color-coded system.
- Attach medical information in each record according to dates of incarceration or date of service.
- Obtain physician signatures on diagnostic studies before filing.
- Maintain both active and inactive files.
- Provide records as requested by health providers and administrative staff.
- Schedule appointments with outside consulting health professionals as assigned.
- Prepare monthly statistics and reports as assigned.
- Perform secretarial duties including answering telephones, typing, and filing.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements & Qualifications
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent certification required.
- Training in an accredited medical records program or at least 1 year of experience in an established medical records system preferred.
- Working knowledge of business English, math, grammar, and spelling.
- Ability to develop correspondence, reports, and operational directives.
- Proven ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to follow moderately complex oral and written instructions.
- Ability to make minor decisions in accordance with rules and regulations.
- Ability to maintain company records and work effectively with the public and detainees.
- Ability to use computers and department software.
