Performs clerical and administrative functions supporting providers and medical staff in the delivery of care. Maintains patient records in an accurate, organized, secure, and readily retrievable manner. Assists the Medical Records Manager with data collection, audit report generation, and submission of other assigned reports.
Key responsibilities include:
- Supporting patient care delivery with clerical and administrative tasks
- Documenting phone messages and returning calls as directed
- Managing internal and external patient referral processes
- Handling requests for information, releases of information, and medical records requests
- Scanning, faxing, emailing, or mailing records to requesting providers and agencies
- Scanning, indexing, and tracking lab work, procedures, testing, dictation, and other medical data in the EHR
- Locating missing information and reports for the medical record
- Pulling purged charts for audits as needed
- Performing general clerical duties such as copying, filing, phoning, emailing, faxing, and organizing
- Assisting with transcription services and potentially scribe duties if trained
- Supporting revenue generation by ensuring accurate documentation, completing insurance forms, and responding to third-party inquiries
Requirements & Qualifications
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Medical records technician certification, or current certified/registered medical assistant with at least 1 year of office or clinical experience required
- Working knowledge of medical terminology
- Knowledge of medical records practices, HIPAA, and utilization management
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality
- Strong organizational, communication, writing, and listening skills
- Ability to work under demanding and challenging clinical circumstances
- Sensitivity to cultural, religious, and ethnic diversity
