Medical Records Technician

This role focuses on maintaining accurate medical and administrative records, supporting patient information requests, and helping protect the integrity of electronic health record documentation.

Duties

  • Scan, index, and file non-electronic medical and administrative information/forms
  • Maintain daily logs of documents scanned, filed, and indexed
  • Respond to customer requests for information in a positive and efficient manner
  • Perform qualitative reviews of work performed by self and others on scanned documents
Requirements & Qualifications

Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizenship required
  • May be subject to a probationary period
  • Selective Service registration required for males born after 12/31/1959
  • Must successfully pass E-Verify and a federal background investigation
  • Must complete required background investigation forms within 5 calendar days of issuance
  • Financial suitability review required
  • May require work on holidays, weekends, and a 24/7 schedule
  • Must comply with IHS immunization policy for healthcare settings
  • REAL ID-compliant identification required prior to appointment

Minimum qualifications

GS-5

  • 4 years of education above high school related to the position, or
  • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-4 performing health information management support functions such as reviewing records for completeness, scanning/indexing/filing medical documentation, quality control checks, release of information processing, maintaining tracking logs, and communicating with providers/staff

GS-6

  • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-5 performing work such as reviewing, scanning, indexing, and maintaining patient medical records in an EHR; processing record requests; conducting quality assurance audits; and performing quantitative and qualitative analysis of medical records

Additional notes

  • No formal education requirement if qualifying through experience
  • Promotion potential to GS-6
