Medical Records Assistant

The Medical Records Assistant (Non Nurse) assists with patients’ clinical records, including coding, auditing, and record management in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and company standards.

They support the maintenance of clinical documentation and record filing systems, apply ICD-10-CM coding, and work within LTC payment systems including Medicare. The role also requires strong communication, confidentiality, customer service, and teamwork in a post-acute care environment.

Requirements & Qualifications

Education and experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Prior medical records experience preferred

Job requirements

  • Knowledge of state and federal legal requirements related to documentation, confidentiality, and health information
  • Ability to communicate effectively with physicians, nursing staff, and allied health personnel
  • Proficiency using complex computer software systems
  • Functional knowledge in the field of practice
  • Ability to make independent decisions when appropriate
  • Knowledge of practices, procedures, laws, regulations, and guidelines governing post-acute care facility functions
  • Ability to implement and interpret department programs, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures
  • Competency in patient rights, safety, and sanitation
  • Ability to maintain professional working relationships and confidentiality
  • Understanding of company policies, harassment/compliance procedures, and Code of Conduct

Essential functions

  • Audit and review patients’ clinical records for documentation and compliance
  • Maintain current, overflow, and discharged record filing systems
  • Understand and apply LTC payment systems, including Medicare
  • Apply ICD-10-CM coding
  • Understand HIPAA requirements
  • Communicate and function productively on an interdisciplinary team
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English
