Medical Record Clerk

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Comprehensive Error Rate Testing (CERT) program supports the integrity of the Medicare Fee-for-Service program by helping ensure payments are accurate, appropriate, and compliant with federal requirements.

This role provides clerical and administrative support for the Medical Records Department under the supervision of the Medical Records Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Process initial medical record requests, including printing pull lists, requesting letters and coversheets, photocopying materials, scanning mailing labels, packing request envelopes with required documents, and mailing via postage meter and U.S. Postal Service
  • Adjudicate ADR (Additional Documentation Request) for TS / MRS call requests from MRS and First Touch reviewers
  • Download and send medical records to MACs and CMS upon request
  • Set up new users and reset passwords for MAC users to access the CERT website
  • Process medical records and appeals requested by MACs
  • Process MAC Accuracy projects
  • Attend required education and training programs
  • Follow departmental policies and procedures
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements & Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Knowledge of medical record processing
  • Ability to lift and move boxes repetitively weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team to meet service level agreements
  • Ability to quality check a high volume of claims daily
  • Ability to work under pressure and within time constraints
  • Ability to solve problems and resolve issues as they arise
  • Ability to multitask
  • Knowledge of personal computer systems, including MS Word and MS Excel
  • Familiarity with equipment such as computers, copiers, fax machines, and scanners
  • Ability to perform record imaging after training
  • Ability to file and retrieve records
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Knowledge of medical terminology

Preferred Qualifications

  • 6 months of medical record experience
